"The inability to stop is the essence of what addiction is,
my favourite drug was more and all."
Nora Volkow
It doesn't matter what a persons background is. It doesn't matter whether someone comes from an inner city housing estate, where poverty and deprivation is normal, or whether someone is from a wealthy, loving and nurturing background. Anyone can fall to addiction!
In the years I've spent working in the addiction field (20+), I have never met one person who set out to become an addict. In my experience addiction is something that creeps up on people, something that doesn't really make itself known until it's there. Once there it may be accepted, welcomed, or denied.
Supprting people with addiction is not a straight forward process that everyone fits into. It is an individual issue for each person. Our support is therefore specific to the individual because of the personal circumstances, and nature of the persons addiction. We need to assess the persons individual circumstances and needs. Once this has been carried out an individual care/support plan will be developed to provide the most comprehensive and effective support system possible.
Our support services will include:
Assessment of needs
Supporting a stable foundation
Preparing for recovery
Planning the recovery process
Action based recovery
Emotional support/resolution
Support networks
Maintaining an addiction free lifestyle
Exploring relapse issues/situations
Ongoing support
Please note; unlike other life changes that people make, becoming free from an addiction is not something that has a beginning, middle and an end. It is a lifetime commitment! However, there is life after addiction. And it can be a wonderful and happy life.
Please don't be daunted by the one of the most difficult challenges that anyone can face.
It is do-able!
And, if other people can do it, so can you, or the people you care about.
